TRENDING: Mommy Makeovers, Should I Take The Bait?

Let’s face it, whenever anything becomes popular, such as mommy makeovers, people get interested. They don’t want to be left out, they want to be in on “the next big thing.” Kind of human nature, I presume.

In the last 10 years women’s attitudes towards cosmetic surgery has done a 180. They love their children, but not what having them has done to their bodies. They are not afraid to acknowledge that they may need a little help beyond the diet and exercise that just hasn’t worked.

Many women have some of the same basic questions about mommy makeovers. Their friends are talking about the trend, they’ve seen their friends after the procedure, and they are more interested than ever before. Let’s answer a few of the basic questions associated with this growing trend called a Mommy Makeover.

1. WHAT EXACTLY IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

The term “mommy makeover” is not a medical term. It is more a descriptive term used to describe a group of procedures that may or may not be included in any particular post pregnancy rejuvenation. The goal of a mommy makeover is to address some of the physical changes that occur after pregnancy, namely, sagging and deflation of the breasts and excess skin and stretch marks of the abdomen.

2.  WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

It would include some combination of the following procedures: breast lift, with or without augmentation, breast reduction, tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, and liposuction.

3.  WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

As with any surgery, yes, there are risks, but no more than any other surgery. There is a risk for bleeding, infection and seroma (fluid collection) formation.

4.  WHERE WILL THE INCISIONS BE AND WILL I HAVE SCARS?

The incisions will be decided on the procedures and the techniques used by your surgeon. For a breast lift, generally a circular incision around the areola is made which is carried down toward the fold under the breast. Placement of an implant can be made through this incision.

For the abdominoplasty, there is a linear incision made from hipbone to hipbone. The belly button may or may not have to be repositioned.

It is not possible to perform these types of surgeries without scarring. This is, yet  again another reason to choose your surgeon wisely. Scarring largely depends on good operative techniques and attention to scar management post op.

5.   HOW LONG SHOULD I EXPECT FOR RECOVERY?

It is essential for you to have help from friends or family for at least the first week. The surgery can be somewhat painful, as muscle tightening could be involved. It should be a total of up to 4 weeks for recovery. Every woman heals at a different rate, but generally, this is the time frame you will be dealing with.
