First Approved Topical Treatment Indicated for Persistent Facial Erythema of Rosacea

Let’s face it, rosacea can be downright embarrassing at times. It can cause reddened cheeks that can cause individuals to not want to go out in public at times. But there may be new hope. A new medication is now available that shows promise in treating these specific symptoms.

Mirvaso (brimonidine) topical gel, 0.33% was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration on August 23, 2013. The drug was approved by the FDA for the topical treatment of persistent (nontransient) facial erythema or rosacea in adults 18 years of age or older. Mirvaso is the first and only FDA-approved topical treatment specifically developed and indicated for the persistent facial erythema of rosacea.

Approval of Mirvaso was based on data from two phase 3 clinical studies of one-month duration.

  • Applied once daily, Mirvaso Gel works quickly and lasts up to 12 hours.
  • In clinical studies, significant improvement compared to vehicle and observed at three, six, nine and twelve hours following application.
  • In controlled clinical trials of Mirvaso Gel, the most common adverse reaction (incidence >1%) included, erythema, flushing, skin burning sensation, and contact dermatitis.
