Medical Spas are Poised for Growth

Scottsdale Medical Spa

Recent figures show that there are about 2,100 “medical spas” or “med spas” operating currently in the United States. This is truly an amazing number considering that med spas only emerged some 10 years ago. Their numbers increase greatly just prior to the recession in 2007-2009. Market data estimates that he medical spa market was worth $1.94 billion in 2010 and forecasts $3.6 billion by 2016. Sales are expected to grow by 18% a year through 2016.

Medical Spa Market + Technology

The market is heavily driven by laser machine technology, which can often achieve results nearly comparable to cosmetic surgery. The advantage is that these technologies are less invasive than traditional surgery. As Baby Boomers age, demand should grow for minimally or non-invasive cosmetic procedures made possible by these new laser advances.

Americans spent $10 billion on cosmetic non-invasive procedures in 2011. 12 million procedures were performed in that year including Botox injections, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, chemical peels, micro-dermabrasion, and skin rejuvenation. Women account for the majority of clients visiting these “spas” making up 83% of all visits. (Med Spa data taken from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery)
