Marc Jacobs on Facelifts and Other Plastic Surgeries

Fashion mogul Marc Jacobs, 58, recently talked with Vogue about his many plastic surgeries, including facelifts, and why transparency is important. Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery & Skin Center has long known that facelifts are one of the most-requested procedures, especially now that mini facelifts (fantastic for those in their 30s and early 40s) are available. Jacobs sat down with Vogue editors after his recovery posts on social media went viral. These particular photos were taken after a facelift where Jacobs tagged his surgeon along with the hashtags #livelovelift and #f*ckgravity.

Jacobs has never been secretive about his cosmetic surgeries, but the responses from these posts encouraged him to be even more forthcoming. He has since shared even more recovery photos, including one where he was in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber as well as a series of snaps documenting the dissipation of bruising and swelling. According to Jacobs, the support he’s received has been phenomenal. “I think you just need to start a conversation,” he said. “And then maybe that will have a resounding echo that helps people feel less ashamed. I just don’t think there’s shame in being vain.”

No Shame in Being Vain: The New Face of Plastic Surgery

Some have called Jacobs’ actions bold, but he’s quick to point out that he’s never kept his “work” a secret. “There have been so many things I’ve been transparent about, like once when I went to an event with a baseball cap and people asked me why … and I said, well, I just had a hair transplant.” He remarks about the number of people who were incredulous that he was so honest. For Jacobs, there’s no reason to hide while he recovers from cosmetic surgery, and his selfie game has been as strong as ever following his facelift.

“I’ve got some scars around my ears, and my face is swollen, and I have a bruised neck, but I’m still posting on Instagram,” he says. “I’m doing what I normally do, which is living my life and sharing it with anybody who is interested … yes, I’m vain. I find there is no shame in being vain. I find there’s no shame in wanting attention. I find there’s no shame in getting dressed up and showing off a look.”

Fortunately, Jacobs won’t have to wait very long for what’s considered a substantial recovery. Full facelifts look completely healed about 2 – 3 weeks after the surgery. That’s a relatively small timeframe, especially compared to facelift downtimes of decades past. However, full results will take up to six months to reveal, though these lingering changes are minimal. There are certainly immediate results, but it takes time for skin trimming and the re-draping of tissue and muscles to fully reveal the results.

How We View Facelifts Today

Of course, a mini facelift requires an even shorter recovery period and incisions are even smaller. Today’s incision techniques hide scarring in the crevices of the ears, and in some circumstances well within the scalp (also known as a ponytail facelift). Jacobs, at nearly 60 years old, was a candidate for the full facelift which offers the most dramatic results. Patients who get full facelifts can look 10+ years younger, and it’s clear from Jacobs’ appearance that he looks much younger than his 58 years.

Jacobs says, “Those are some of the things that give me pleasure. Self-care on every level … external and internal wellness are really important. I say the same thing about all of it, which is that the better I feel about myself, the better I’m able to be to others.” Gone are the days when “vain” was an inherently negative term. Jacobs and others are reclaiming it, and underscoring how vanity can positively fit within the framework of holistic wellness.
