Introducing Doctor Sommelier!

Welcome to my introductory blog about wine. Many of you may not know it, but I recently passed a series of tests so that I could become certified as a Sommelier. I think I did this to challenge myself a little, but also did it because I love wine! Since becoming a Sommelier, a question I’m often asked is, “What is your favorite wine?”

This may seem like a very simple straightforward question, but after you have spent time studying wine, it is crazy how many different types of wines that are out there in the world. Every state in the United States produces wine. There are so many amazing wines and truthfully I have come to love so many different types of wines. I love that wines go with so many different types of food. In addition, I have come to understand that wine can be paired with so many different types of situations. To further handicap my ability to pick my one “favorite wine,” I have amassed a lot of wine at this point my life. Sometimes when I look at the amount of wine that I store, I am a little excited and a little embarrassed all at the same time. However, when I really think about that question the answer is fairly simple.

Of all the wines out there in the world there are 3 favorite bottles that are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. All 3 come from the same location, Bordeau, France. All 3 are unique in that they were purchased during the birth years of our children. These 3 special bottles have been kept for years now. The oldest is 16 years while the youngest is 12 years old. I will continue to carefully care for these special bottles until each of the kids turns 21. At that point, we will have, what I hope is a memorable night where we get to share each of these very special wines together with our adult children. If I have done my job it will be a really great night!

FALL WINE SELECTION:

Fall is finally in the air! And Fall means that we can start focusing on wines that are great for cooler nights and heartier meals. One of my favorite wines for this time of year is Pinot Noir.
There are so many great types of Pinot Noir wines available today.
My two go tos are, American Pinot’s from Willamette Valley,  Oregon as well as Old World Pinot’s from France. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb and try a French Pinot Noir. Many people don’t realize that when someone talks about Red Burgundy wine, all that means is that they are Pinot Noir wines from the Burgundy region of France. They have an amazingly distinctive Old World flavor that can be very different from New World, American Pinot Noirs. Both types can be great, but depending on what you’re trying to serve, you can never go wrong with a great Red Burgundy (Pinot Noir) from France. One of my favorites is this bottle to the right that can likely be found at your local wine store.
