Important Facts About Breast Implants

Breast implant surgery is clearly the most popular elective surgery in the plastic surgery field. Women all over the country choose breast implant surgery every year, and the vast majority are beyond thrilled with their results. However, it is important to remember that it is major surgery and along with that comes concerns and precautions. There are a few important points you should consider if you are contemplating breast implant surgery:

Risks And Side Effects With Breast Implants

It should be understood that there are risks with all surgeries, and we should remember that breast augmentation surgery has shown positive results for decades. However, having said that, possible side effects and risks should always be openly discussed during your consultation. All of your questions and concerns should be addressed before surgery.

Possible side effects and risks include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Infection
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation)
  • Capsular contracture (formation of scar tissue around the implant)
  • Skin wrinkling over implants
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation

Type Of Breast Implant Options

  • Saline –Sterile salt water is what Saline breast implants are filled with. They have a soft, natural feel and a uniform firmness. Saline breast implants are available with a flexible fill volume, meaning that the size can be adjusted during surgery.
  • Silicone – Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. They also have a natural feel but they are slightly firmer and a bit more natural than saline implants. Available only with a set fill volume, you must determine the size before surgery.

Determining Breast Implant Size

The size of your implants should be determined by the overall size of your body, breast tissue, and of course, your surgeon’s advice. Dr. Parson will consult with you and do a thorough examination to determine the right size implants for you. He will also discuss the pros and cons of the different types of implants and the sizes available.

How Is The Breast Implant Placed?

There are different techniques, but most commonly during surgery, a small incision is made under each breast, then implants are inserted either directly behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle or directly under the pectoral muscle itself. The type of implants used, the size of the implants and your surgeon’s preference for best results determine placement. When the implants are in position, incisions are closed with sutures. There are other areas also used for placement, such as under the arms. But again, the placement is largely dependent on the type of breast implant used, the size of the implant itself and your body size.
