Facelift Recovery…How Much Downtime Should I Expect?

Recovery from a facelift surgery takes many forms. There is the physical recovery, the social recovery, and the recovery of sensation. For many, because it is your face, the social aspect can sometimes be the hardest part of the recovery process.

Your recovery from a facelift largely depends on the plastic surgeon that you select and his or her protocol for recovery. The plastic surgeon with experience and expertise will have long-lasting results and have the skills to make the initial recovery shorter, with less swelling and bruising.

One must remember that a facelift is a serious surgical procedure. The head and face will be loosely bandaged, a drainage tube may be placed to prevent fluid from collecting under the skin and pain medication is usually prescribed. Post operative swelling, numbness and skin discoloration should be expected for about two weeks. Most stitches will be removed in about 5 days and the initial results of the facelift will be apparent soon after that.

Most patients are able to return to work in 10-14 days. Your surgeon will put certain restrictions on you according to your particular lifestyle. Vigorous exercise should be avoided, as well as saunas, steam rooms and alcohol. During the facelift recovery period, extra rest is very important to promote proper healing.
