Dermal Fillers aren’t Just for the Lips

You might credit Kylie Jenner with making the dermal filler market skyrocket, but in reality dermal fillers were used for many years prior. Fillers have long been one of the most-requested treatments at Parson Skin Center, and while lip fillers are certainly in high demand, the lips are not the only place that benefits from plumping. When our faces (and hands!) “age,” there’s more to it than an influx of wrinkles. Skin laxity, pockets of fat, and areas that lose volume and good fat all contribute to an aged look. This includes the lips, and particularly the upper lips that tend to flatten with age—but if we only focus on the lips, we miss other areas that are undergoing the same changes.

When it comes to lip fillers, there are two types of clients. One falls into the category of being 35+ and typically starts to see how lost volume is making them look older. They may want to restore the volume they’ve lost and some want to go the extra mile and give a little more plumpness than they’ve ever had before.

The other group are younger patients, usually in their 20s or 30s, who simply want more volume than they genetically have. No matter which group you belong to, one thing is constant: the injector must have expert understanding of lip anatomy. If they don’t, that’s when you can get sausage-roll lips, trout pout, and duck lips. Lips are inherently unique, and they don’t have the same volume throughout. The cupid’s bow absolutely must be retained, and that’s going to require expertise.

Beyond Lip Service: Juvederm and Restylane

It’s been all about the lips in recent years, which is why the best makers of lip fillers like Juvederm and Restylane offer a few different options for lip fillers. However, if you’re really savvy and want to turn back the clock or amp up your look, you’ll be interested in fillers beyond the lips. One of the best places you can use fillers to look instantly younger and refreshed is below the eyes.

We have dark circles and bags under the eyes for many reasons. For starters, this skin is thin, delicate, mobile, and typically sun-damaged. Combine that with gravity, and it’s no surprise that we “age” under the eyes first. Add in some loss of “good fat” due to age and it’s a recipe for disaster. Undereye fillers can instantly make you look younger, less tired, and even fill in those dark circles and crepe-like appearance—but be careful! This area is very difficult to treat and yield a natural result, so you only want to work with expert injectors here.

Facial Revitalization

Cheek fillers have long been popular, due in large part to the same reason as the under-eye area . As we get older, we lose good volume here. This can lead to a gaunt, skeletal look. A youthful face still has some baby fat with plump cheeks. If you want to regain that glow, cheek fillers can give you instant results. Some clients worry that it will make them look heavier than they are, but that isn’t the case at all. In fact, the epitome of a youthful look is a fit body and a rounder face.

Another great place for fillers is along the jawline. In many ways, looking young and trim comes down to the jawline. There are many people who are slender and fit but just don’t have a strong jaw, so they look older and more out of shape than they are. We’ve had many clients bring in a picture of Ariana Grande, citing her jawline as the ideal result. This can be achieved without working out to death in the gym—jawline fillers yield incredible results.

A Holistic Approach

Increasingly, clients are looking for more comprehensive approaches to their beauty regimen. This means not putting filler in just one place (like the lips) but rather considering the face as a whole. Plus, dermal fillers on the tops of the hands are gaining in popularity, too! The hands often give away age even when the face looks youthful. If you’ve noticed a loss of fat in the hands, very visible and bumpy veins, and want to nip that problem in the bud, dermal fillers for the hands are available.
