Animals Approved for 3-D Breast Implants

Don’t worry—we don’t offer breast augmentation on animals or 3D printed breast implants at Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery & Skin Center. However, we do keep up to date on the latest breast augmentation research since breast enhancement via implants is one of the most in-demand cosmetic procedures at our clinic and around the country. Recently, CollPlant, a regenerative medicine specialist, announced that they have been approved for animal trials to gauge the effectiveness of 3D printed breast implants. It is estimated that this in-vivo testing will commence this summer.

Researchers report that the grafts are designed to slowly degrade in order for the native tissues to slowly replace them. This is being touted as a potential alternative to breast augmentation in the future. According to CollPlant, this approach might be used in 2.2 million surgeries—tapping into a multi-billion dollar industry. The CEO of CollPlant says, “We are also making continued progress with the development of bio-inks for 3D bioprinting applications, and with development of a photocurable dermal filler.”

Breasts are Best

The CollPlant implants are made with fat cells from patients along with ECM parts, rhCollagen, and the company’s own tobacco plant (an alternative to collagen sourced from cadavers and animals). It is theorized that when these grafts are injected into live tissue, they kick-start the regeneration of native cells while simultaneously starting their own degradation process. This means there will be no lingering of foreign components when the process is complete. CollPlant calls this technique revolutionary with the potential to be on par with both silicone implants and fat transfers—though it is far from ready for market.

Working with 3D printing (and breasts) is not new to CollPlant. Previously, they worked with 3D technology for breast reconstruction for cancer survivors. The researchers also say it is possible for this latest technology to build off of or complement their former work. Until then, you still have plenty of options for breast augmentation with saline and silicone implants customized for your needs and goals.

Choosing Breast Augmentation

Both saline and silicone implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures. Choose placement above or below the chest muscles, and in some cases patients can also help to inform the incision location. Saline implants require a shorter incision than silicone, but gummy bear implants (a kind of silicone implant) are some of the most popular because many patients say they are the most realistic. However, placing implants below the chest muscles can also increase the implant’s natural look and feel (especially for very slender patients).

Breast reconstruction, such as with what CollPlant previously researched, is a different type of breast surgery. The vast majority of patients are seeking breast augmentation, which enhances the shape and appearance of natural breasts (it is not a reconstruction). Although most breast implants don’t have an “expiration date,” most patients choose to change their implants every 15 years as trends, lifestyles, and personal preferences shift. Today’s most popular look for implants is smaller, more natural-looking, and teardrop-shaped. Twenty years ago, the trend was large, round, and intentionally “fake” looking.

Are You Ready for Breast Augmentation?

The skill of your plastic surgeon is paramount to a safe and enjoyable experience. Dr. Parson specializes in breast augmentation, and you can see for yourself what kind of results you can expect in the before/after gallery. However, bear in mind that every surgery is unique and individualized for the patient. Look for patients with breasts similar to yours pre-surgery and those whose results are similar to what you would like to achieve.

You still have time to schedule your breast augmentation consultation (and surgery!) to be able to show off results by the end of summer. Recovery from many cosmetic surgeries is typically much quicker and smoother than many people realize. Most patients are back to all daily activities, including cardio, just 6 – 8 weeks after their surgery.
