Gummy Bear Implants, the Safest Silicone Implants Yet

For years there were just two options for breast implant materials: silicone or saline. That is still technically true, but thanks to revolutionary innovations there are differences in these two types, with gummy bear breast implants being the latest innovation in silicone breast augmentation. All types of safe, beautiful breast implants are available at Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery & Skin Center, where we are committed to giving you natural-looking results that you’ll love. This means full customization not just of silicone or saline, but also shape, size, incision placement (to some degree, as this depends on the patient), and placement of the implant itself (above or below the pectoral muscles).

What exactly makes gummy bear breast implants different—and, in many cases, better? Original silicone breast implants underwent nearly 15 years of study to gauge their safety, but during that time changes were also being made. Although silicone breast implants are typically considered safe today, gummy bear implants have proven to be even safer. In fact, gummy bear implants are considered safer than any other option. As you likely guessed, it’s named after the candy that is simultaneously soft and yet sturdy, and quite tough to break or tear. However, in the rare event that a gummy bear implant does break, the silicone sticks to itself and is very unlikely to leak into the body. This is not true of traditional silicone implants, which in some cases can leak dramatically and even damage tissue.

It can be difficult to tell if there is a tear, break, or leak in silicone implants (traditional or gummy bear) because the material tends to stick together a bit. Saline implant ruptures are quite obvious (and saline is completely safe to be inside the body). This means that if you get silicone implants, whether the original or gummy bear, it’s important to have them checked regularly. Still, you have a lower risk of rupture overall with gummy bear implants, which means peace of mind.

The Sweet Side of Breast Implants

The manufacturer of gummy bear implants reports a “capsular contracture rate” that is less than four percent. Compare this to both traditional silicone and saline breast implants, which have a 15% contracture rate (as reported in a study in Plastic Surgery Journal) and it’s clear how much safer gummy bear implants are. A lower risk of tearing and breakage also means a much lesser chance of needing revision or replacement in the future. Of course, you can always change your implants in future years should your preference for size or shape evolve.

Gummy bear implants also come with a lifetime warranty, although on average most women replace their implants every 15 years (either due to damage or simply because they have changed their preferred aesthetic). This includes Tori Spelling, who recently reported that she had her breast implants “redone” after the urging of her 13-year-old daughter, Stella. Spelling first got implants 20 years ago, and she knew they should be replaced but didn’t get around to it.

According to Spelling, “I got them when I was really young. And I didn’t know that at a certain point they would have an expiration. I didn’t know that you would have to do it again.” When Spelling mentioned this to her children, her eldest took note. Spelling made her appointment when Stella said, “Mom, I’m concerned. You have put this off. You told me for years now that you need to get your boobs redone.” Ultimately, Spelling says she made the decision for “health reasons.” Spelling didn’t say which kind of implants she was getting (though she did say she’s going “a little bigger”), but if she opts for gummy bear implants they might be the last breast implants she ever needs.

Choosing the Right Breast Implants for You

Everyone is different, so it’s fantastic that breast augmentation surgery is so customizable. Today, the trend is towards more natural-looking, smaller, teardrop-shaped breast implants—but of course there are exceptions, like in Spelling’s case. The goal at a reputable plastic surgeon is to ensure you are happy with the results.
