Textured vs. Smooth Breast Implants

Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery and Skin Center is committed to providing patients the most updated information about their procedures. A particular area of interest is the difference between textured and smooth implants for breast augmentation patients. It may seem odd to focus on the texture of the implant because, after all, it is located under the skin. However, you may be surprised to learn that there are significant differences between them. Understanding these two options will help you make the appropriate decision that aligns with your goals.

Textured Breast Implants

Textured implants are thought to have a similar shape to natural breasts. Originally, textured implants were first offered in the plastic surgery community as an alternative to reducing capsular contracture. This is when the scar tissue forms around the implant and creates an unnatural look. However, research has indicated that there isn’t a significant correlation between textured implants and the likeliness of capsular contracture. There are a few things to keep in mind about textured implants.

  • Textured implants are usually offered with teardrop implants to help them remain in place. Because of the teardrop shape, these implants look the most unnatural when they are even slightly misplaced.
  • Textured implants have been known to leak and ripple a little more often than smooth implants, but they usually stay in place more often.
  • Textured implants commonly cost more than smooth implants.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants are the most popular texture in the cosmetic surgery industry. Usually, smooth implants are placed under the muscle to help them stay in place and avoid capsular contracture. Here are a few additional benefits:

  • Smooth implants usually have a longer lifespan than textured implants.
  • Because of their popularity, smooth implants typically cost a little less than textured.
  • Smooth implants have less chance of rippling.

Which Breast Implant is Right for You?

Much of the decision will come down your desired look as well as your current breast tissue. It’s important to discuss your options and weigh the pros and cons of each decision to come to the best selection for your physical goals.
