Surprising Uses For Botox – How It Really Works

A substance known as botulinum toxin is made from a neurotoxin produced by bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. Yes, a lot of giant words used to describe that “magic potion” we commonly refer to as Botox. It is most often used to treat muscular conditions and is also routinely used to remove wrinkles by weakening muscles temporarily. Most people are familiar with the brand known as Botox, but there are other brands that can be used that have results similar to Botox. Those include Dysport, Xeomin, and Myobloc.

How Does Botox Work?

It must be remembered that it is only the dosage that makes Botox a “dangerous poison”. Used in extremely small doses and injected into humans, botulinum toxin works by preventing signals from the nerve cells from reaching the muscles, essentially “paralyzing” them.

Medical and Cosmetic Ways To Use Botox

Beyond the well-known way Botox is used, namely for the treatment of wrinkles, there are many other applications in which Botox is used. Botulinum toxin is currently approved and used to treat many medical conditions, with many more under review.

Some of these include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Chronic migraine headaches
  • Excessive sweating
  • Hypersalivation
  • Crossed eyes
  • Neck and shoulder spasms
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Spasm of the eyelid
  • Laryngeal Dystonia (contraction of the vocal cords)
  • Dysfunction of the anal sphincter
  • Achalasia (difficulty swallowing)
