Are Calcium – Channel Blockers Associated with Excess Breast Cancer Risk?

Channel Blockers and Cancer Risks

(NEJM Journal Watch)- Several small studies have suggested an association between Calcium-Channel Blocker use and excess risk for breast Cancer; other studies, particularly those with short follow-up, have shown no relation. To understand the conflicting results, investigators identified 1,907 women (age range, 55-74) with invasive ductal or invasive lobular carcinomas from a surveillance registry; cases were age-matched to 856 controls without breast cancer.

After adjustment for potential co-founders, risk for both ductal and lobular breast cancer was about 2.5 time higher among current long-term Calcium-Channel Blocker users (at least 10 years) than among women who never used antihypertensive medications. No excess risk was identified with use of other classes of antihypertensive or short-term (

The findings appear to strengthen the association between Calcium-Channel Blockers and breast cancer. A commenter in the study notes that the findings are worrisome, but do not lead to specific clinical recommendation just yet.
