Are You Happy with What’s Under the Mask?

As more and more mask mandates are lifted, it’s time to reveal your face for the first time in two years—is it sending the message you’d like? Dr. Shaun Parson Plastic Surgery & Skin Center has seen an influx in requests for facelifts since the onset of the pandemic. First, it was in part due to spending hours every day staring at yourself in a screen. Now, more patients are saying it’s because they no longer have the option to “hide” behind a mask. We have heard countless anecdotes about the surprising benefits of a mask, from camouflaging double chins to hiding frown lines and jowls. Now that the world is becoming increasingly mask-free, you deserve to show off a face you’re proud of.

A full facelift addresses the lower half of the face and the neck. That’s right—a neck lift is naturally part of a facelift. Ultimately, a facelift is focused on the area that has been tucked behind a mask for months. It trims away excess skin and re-drapes it over underlying tissue. Incisions are hidden in the ear crevices and the incision for the neck lift is a small “dot” right under the chin. Dr. Parson offers the “ponytail facelift” so you can sweep up your hair with confidence, knowing that no incisions will give away your little secret.

Post-Pandemic Facelifts

Okay, technically we are not post-pandemic yet, but we are living in the pandemic under less constrictive masking conditions. Many people have understandably noticed a speeding up of the aging process due to stress of the last two years. This means more and deeper wrinkles, frown lines, skin laxity, and general poor skin tone and texture. A facelift can help with all of these issues. But what if you’re not quite ready for such an aggressive procedure yet? After all, a full facelift can turn back the clock by 10+ years!

A mini lift might be for you, and is a great pick for those in their 50s, 40s, and sometimes even 30s. It’s similar to a full facelift but with shorter and fewer incisions. A mini lift can help to delay the need/desire for a full facelift by several years while still giving you the age-reversal you want—plus an even shorter recovery period.

Is a Facelift for You?

Both a facelift and a mini lift are a surgical procedure that require anesthesia and downtime. However, the recovery is usually much quicker and easier than patients expect. Your timeline will be unique, but many patients get back to sedentary jobs just one week after their surgery. You can resume almost all activities at 4 – 6 weeks, though “full recovery” does not happen until six months. However, if you schedule your consult and appointment now, you’ll still have beautiful results to showcase for your summer holidays.

You can also amplify the results of a facelift or mini lift with non-surgical procedures such as laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels, and in-office facials. A facelift does not affect the quality of the skin besides improving laxity, lines, and wrinkles. If you have sun damage, acne scars, or other such concerns, a facelift will not fix them. Instead, you will need non-surgical complementary treatments to achieve this. Many patients combine surgical and non-surgical treatments in order to get the best possible results.
