Types of Breast Augmentation Implants

What types of breast implants are available?

Dr. Parson uses both silicone and saline gel breast implants. Although breast implants vary by filler (silicone or saline), there are other breast implant features to think about – texture, shape, profile, and diameter. Dr. Parson prefers to use an implant with a smooth texture because problems with wrinkling and unnatural tactile feeling are avoided. Dr. Parson also prefers to use a round implant because it has a more natural appearance to it.

Are the breast implants used in the surgery safe?

All of our breast implants used in breast augmentation surgery have approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Having FDA approval means that the silicone and saline breast implants have been thoroughly tested, researched and judged to be safe by an independent panel of physicians.

Are textured implants better than smooth implants?

It is really a personal choice of your surgeon. Implants placed below the muscle, whether smooth or textured, have very little difference. Both have a very equivalent chance of capsular contracture and both give a very similar appearance. Smooth implants are more commonly placed by more surgeons in this country for that particular location. Textured implants also are firmer than smooth implants and this can be a good or bad thing depending on the particular patient’s goals and desires. Textured implants also typically need a larger incision to place so this can also be a negative when comparing the two.

What is involved in breast enlargement surgery? How is it different from a breast lift?

Breast enlargement surgery or augmentation requires incisions in order to insert the breast implants. For the best post-surgical appearance, a pocket below each breast is made with very specific boundaries. The surgeon will choose the incision location based on the specific characteristics of the patient. Dr. Parson will review your particular case and make the best decision for you.

A breast lift is for women with sagging breasts and does not require breast implants. During the procedure, called a mastopexy, the surgeon removes excess breast skin, which gives the breasts a more youthful, firm appearance.

What are the prices of breast implant, breast reduction, and breast lift procedures?

The cost varies for each procedure. The total cost will be discussed before you agree to anything or have to sign anything. You will have ample time to review the costs and ask any questions.
