REVISIONAL SURGERY

While the goal of plastic surgery is to achieve a desired aesthetic result, this, unfortunately, isn't always the case. Sometimes a revision surgery may be necessary to correct a previous surgery and requires a surgeon with experience in this area. Unsatisfactory breast surgery may include such problems as asymmetrical breasts, synmastia, inverted nipples, capsular contracture, malpostion of the implants, rippling, and conversion of the implants to below or above the muscle. Complications from a previous breast implant procedure can cause physical discomfort and pain.

Breast implant revision surgery can relieve many of the physical problems and poor cosmetic appearance caused by a previous breast augmentation by removing scar tissue or repositioning the implant. Breast implant replacement can improve cosmetic appearance by replacing a deflated implant, or by replacing the previous implant with a different type, a larger or smaller size, and/or different shape. Some patients choose to have their implants removed permanently. Dr. Parson is experienced in handling these and other anatomical and physiologic breast conditions, like tuberous breasts, underdeveloped breasts and chest deformities that may require additional surgeries.

There are many reasons for a revisional breast surgery and may include any of the following:
  • Areolae too large
  • Asymmetry (uneven breasts)
  • Breasts have fallen
  • Breast implants too low or too high
  • Capsular contracture
  • Changing from over the muscle to under the muscle
  • Change of implant type (saline to silicone or vice versa)
  • Deflation of the implant
  • Double Bubble (extra crease on the bottom of the breast)
  • Exchange for larger or smaller implants
  • Extrusion
  • Infection
  • Misplacement
  • Pocket revision
  • Removal of the implant
  • Rippling (wrinkling) of the implant
  • Stretched breast skin
  • Synmastia
  • Unacceptable scarring

Previous liposuction which has caused dimpling, asymmetry or contour irregularities, is not uncommon. Sometimes too little fat is removed, or too much fat in some areas. Any remaining fatty deposits can be smoothed out and corrected with additional liposuction and/or a different liposuction technique, such a ultrasonic liposuction. When there is denting of the skin, a small amount of fat is taken from another part of your body and is injected into the area to fill out the irregularity. If the skin is loose and doesn't retract back after an initial liposuction surgery, there are some procedures that can be done to correct this as well.

Revision rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct an unsatisfactory result from a previous nasal surgery. Sometimes the nose may function well following surgery, but is cosmetically unacceptable to the patient. In other cases, while the cosmetic result is pleasing to the patient, there may be a functional problem that hinders a person's breathing. Secondary rhinoplasty procedures are more difficult to perform than traditional rhinoplasty surgery in that the septum may have been altered or partly removed during the first surgery. In addition, scar tissue from the first surgery can sometimes be difficult to remove and the skin may be have become thicker. It is usually advisable to wait at least one year from the time of the initial surgery to perform a secondary surgery. This allows time to let the nose take its final shape, which can then be evaluated properly for facial balance, nose shape and function.
